– attributed to Augustine of Hippo (354–430)
Also known as Saint Augustus, he was an early Christian theologian and philosopher whose writings influenced the development of Western Christianity and Western philosophy. He was bishop of Hippo Regius in what is now Algeria. He was one of the most prolific Latin authors in terms of surviving works, with a list of over one hundred separate titles attributed to him. The quote above is merrily attributed to him, though my investigations show it may be a slightly amended version of his words.
Whether it was definitely the Hippo Bishop or not, it is a quote I am very fond of. My blog readers know by now that I am somewhat addicted to travelling, and as a librarian (a few decades ago!) the booklike definition of the world appeals to me.
