This road sign, designed by Jacob Sempler and Emil Tiisman, made a controversial appearance in Stockholm in November 2015. When I spotted it, I wasn’t sure if it was waning drivers to watch out for these distracted pedestrians, or warning the pedestrians to look at the street not their phones. It seems that the designers intended them to warn the pedestrians, though not all of the public welcomed the idea.
Not that Sweden is the only place to have the problem, nor the only place to have tackled it. In Antwerp, for example, there are lanes painted on the pavement and marked as “text walking lane”.
