Lido obelisk, Cliftonville, March 2016

The Lido in Cliftonville, on the edge of Margate, was the name given to Clifton Baths in 1938.  The baths themselves were built in 1824-28, some of the oldest seawater baths in the UK, filled and emptied by the tide and providing a service to up to 1,000 bathers at a time.  During its lengthy history, the Lido has had an amphitheatre, cinema, bar and cafes and it was a lively hub of local social life.  The pool itself is no longer operating, sadly, but the building is Grade II listed, and its new owners are planning to turn it into an aquarium.  To see some great pictures of it back in its heyday, click here.

A colourful note:  tangerine colour is named after the orange colored citrus fruit that is closely related to, or possibly a type of, mandarin orange.  Its name comes from the mandarin-type fruit that came from Tangier in Morocco.

Vivid tangerine appeared as a Crayola crayon in 1990.
