Diri Baba Mausoleum, Azerbaijan, March 2017
This two storey mausoleum and mosque dates back to the 15th century. The sleek but simple building is wedged into a rugged cliff and both take on added majesty because of this juxtaposition.
The building is perched on the cliff wall, but newer and more dilapidated steps provide easy access to the lower level. From here, a spiral staircase leads you to the more ornate second floor, and from there you can climb to the roof and dome.
It is located just over an hour outside Baku, on the route to Sheki, and I highly recommend a visit.

It was a complete surprise – it was recommended by the hotel manager who had accompanied me on the drive back to Baku from Sheki. I hadn’t read anything about it as it wasn’t in my guide book.

The bit at the front was easier than it looks, but the spiral steps inside were rather high for me short legs, especially as I had 2 cameras hanging around my neck and I was trying not to let them hit a step! The guy who looked after the mosque actually pulled me up the last couple. And he didn’t laugh at my outfit: I had left my headscarf in the car and rather than go back I had tied my sweatshirt around my head!!

And Sony announced a new super camera yesterday, the A9. It sounds amazing, a mirrorless for professionals. But the price requires a lottery win!

I’m obsessed and almost always carry 2 – saves changing lenses outside and getting sensor dirty. My cameras are mirrorless so extra susceptible to dirt, but also light so not much extra weight compared with weight of the lenses.
This shot was with my 16-35mm, my other camera probably had 70-300 on it.

I think there’s a spot of symbiosis between cliff and mosque! As for the steps, they supported me, so they may have a bit of life left in them yet 😉
