  1. The pillar is boring on its own. The people pretty uninteresting. But in the one picture together, the contrast produces a different atmosphere entirely.

    1. The gardens themselves date back to 1772.
      The monument is to 1st Viscount Melville (1742-1811), a man once described as ‘the uncrowned king of Scotland’. The 150ft tall column was designed in 1821
