This 3D creature is the work of Portuguese street artist Artur Bordalo, known as Bordalo II. Born in Lisbon in 1987, grandson of famous artist Artur Real Bordalo da Silva, he has developed into a street artist who reuses waste products to gift us with striking and thought-provoking works of art.
“One man’s trash is another man’s treasure”
The bee, created for Factory LX in Lisbon, is part of his Trash Animals series, and is typical of both his artistic style and his recycling skills. He retrieves discarded materials from wastelands and abandoned factories, and some pieces from companies that are focused on recycling. His choice of subject for this series is sobering – building animals out of materials that are responsible for their destruction.

By coincidence I came across one of Bordalo’s trash animals for the first time in Paris last week. I have a beaver waiting to make its way into a post but it can’t quite compete with this magnificent insect!
