This conical stone fell from the heavens, and is believed to be the stone thrown down by Zeus to mark the centre of the world.

Have you ever seen the movie “The Gods Must Be Crazy”? There is a scene where the main character arrives at God’s Window (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blyde_River_Canyon_Nature_Reserve#God.27s_Window) which he considers the end of the earth (because he stands on a plateau looking down on a sea of clouds). It’s a gorgeous spot but I didn’t really take photographs back when I was there.

Yes, the site is not easily accessible, sadly. The museum there is fine, but not the rest. And the stadium was closed when I was there – risk of landslides I believe – so not accessible for anyone!

It’s a great word isn’t it! And !’ve decided that i really need to learn some Greek! There were some young drama students rehearsing near the theatre at Delphi and I realised how beautiful a language it is. Something else to add to my to do list 🙂

Zeus, in his attempt to locate the center of the earth, launched two eagles from the two ends of the world, and the eagles, starting simultaneously and flying at equal speed, crossed their paths above the area of Delphi, and so was the place where Zeus placed the stone.

I read Greek Mythology as a kid……immersed in the stories nothing to do with school. I think I read most of the books in the local library childrens section

I lived in a library but somehow bypassed the classics…..going to rectify that this year 😊 about time I knew them all and not just random sections!

I’m just waiting for a delayed flight home (due to morning fog at Gatwick) and am enjoying the comments
As for the myths – try reading Stephen Fry’s Mythos (and the follow up, Heroes, which I haven’t got to yet) He tells the stories wonderfully and it is totally fascinating. Like you, Becky, I lived with books as a child (and became a librarian) but skipped many of the classics.

ooh I didn’t know you were once a librarian too. Are you like Anabel and visit all the libraries where you go? She’s got me doing it now and it is fabulous!

Very modern! Unfortunately, the weather was dreadful (rain and high winds) so I couldn’t enjoy it from outside which was there its beauty really lay. And other parts were closed for a private event! Oh well, it’s always good to have a reason to return
