The striking modern building that awaits you as you step through the City Gate of Valletta, is the work of Renzo Piano. It has received very mixed opinions on both its design and its suitability for a UNESCO heritage site. Its knobbly walls have been likened to both a dovecote and a cheese grater. Piano’s inspiration was, in fact, a honeycomb, referencing the origins of the name Malta, which comes from melite, meaning honey.
