We see what we see

“The traveller sees what he sees. The tourist sees what he has come to see.

G.K. Chesterton

Tintagel Old Post Office, Cornwall, May 2021

This beauty was built around 650 years ago as a single-storey thatch-roofed farmhouse. It has seen many changes since then, with significant redevelopment in the 16 and 17th centuries. The cattle shelter turned into a private parlour, first floor bedrooms were added in various stages, and the thatch was replaced by slate.

Whilst it has always been a home, it has served other purposes too. It became the local letter-receiving office in Victorian times and still sports a rare postbox in its front wall. The building is now in the care of the National Trust and is known as the Old Post Office.

For those who have this medieval delight on their checklist but don’t get to Tintagel, there’s another version on offer at Lands End.

It’s just a tad smaller than the original, but much easier to take a photo without a wide angle lens.

It’s time for my (usually) weekly quotation-inspired image.

  1. Suitably inspired Debbie. What a wonderful old building pity you had to be outside and not be able to glimpse the inside. Love the different angles and views 🙂 🙂
