Occasionally, I take public transport. EVERYBODY is on their phone, even groups of children and youngsters interacting with each other are on their phone at the same time, either doing something else or sharing with their friends. Single people are on the phone. I am no exception, it seems a good time to catch up on whatever I do on the smartphone. But I sometimes wonder: I used to observe, I used to sort my thoughts when I had these “unproductive” times. Is my brain missing these productive “downtimes”?
It probably is. I do sit and watch sometimes, often eying up a photo that I know I won’t take. And sometimes I read a book – if on a longer journey. But the phone wins more often – emails, messages, shopping, sometimes just making notes
I agree, Janet. I have very mixed views about mobile phones – great to stay in touch and communicate with friends, but can also be so isolating and addictive

These days too many breaks include time on a phone. Rather depressing, but I like the photo.
