where in the world does this make you feel?
I saw a beautiful photo of this church at the Hélène Binet RA exhibition last week, and until I looked down at the surroundings I was sure I was in Italy.
In fact, it’s a church I often stop to admire on my wanderings around London, and I still didn’t recognise it. It’s a Hawksmoor masterpiece – Christ Church in Spitalfields, London. Built between 1714 and 1729 it has been caringly and accurately restored over the last forty years.

Looking up at it from the street it seemed in place. But looking at the photos it definitely whisks me off somewhere else. I’ll have to read more about what would have influenced his designs.

The style doesn’t look that old. And the recent restoration work has been thorough, removing some in between changes to put it back to the original.
