The Harbourmaster’s Office

Harbourmaster’s office, Broadstairs jetty, Kent

Goodwin Sands is a 10 mile long sand bank, on top of chalk, lying about 6 miles off the coast. Positioned close to major shipping routes it has caused many a shipwreck. Over 2,000 ships have been caught by this geographic feature, and it has made appearances in a number of books and films, from Shakespeare’s Merchant of Venice and King John, to Moonraker and Chitty Chitty Bang Bang. The sand bank has also been a popular location for cricket, and even the odd game of bowls and football.

  1. Interesting Harbormaster’s office – and two doors in one capture! It reminds me on that in Holland there were in the past houses of the one who opens and closes a bridge. How the world changes in one generation!
