A peep through this window, reveals the statue of Caesar Augustus looking down over Tarragona’s coastline. Tarraco, as it was called in Roman times, is the first and oldest Roman settlement on the Iberian Peninsula, and it became the capital of the Province of Hispania Citerior, during the reign of emperor Augustus, who actually lived here for a time.

Wasn’t Hadrian born there…?

I hadn’t heard that. I’ve had a good old google and various sources say he was either born near Seville or in Rome. Next time I’m in Tarragona I’ll listen out for more on that topic.

Ah yes, I remember now that nobody’s quite sure… but my money is on that he was born in Spain. The Rome story was surely invented for political reasons, to ‘legitimise’ him as an Emperor. He built a ton of nifty things all over the place 🙂
