…”For nine days, the deadly winds carried me across the sea of fish. On the tenth day we reached the land of the Lotus Eaters, who live solely on a type of flower”…Thirty centuries ago, Homer landed Ulysses on this famous island of the Lotus Eaters.
That island is the scenic island of Djerba, just off the coast of Tunisia.
The tale of Ulysses, or Odysseus as he is known in Greek mythology, and his visit to the land of the Lotus Eaters is the famous monomyth, the Odyssey. A great tale of a hero, battling to return to his wife, and overcoming terrifying monsters, narcotic plants and beguiling women to do so.
Djerba is much easier to visit now! It is a mere hop by ferry from mainland Tunisia.
At just 514 km2 and a population of just 139,544 ( 2004 Census), it is not a large island.
Visit the main town of Houmt Souk to soak up the atmosphere, sample the local handicrafts at the markets and enjoy the pleasant sea front.
