The long-running renovation works at Kings Cross station in London are almost over. There is still a final piece of work going on at the side of the station that looks onto St Pancras, but the new square itself is open. The fences are down at last, bus stops are back to normal and there is no more slalom course between the underground exit and the mainline station.
When I went through the station on Thursday evening, the film crews were still there, the seating area was looking pristine and the building was golden and handsome in the evening sun. This redesign and renovation has revealed the original facade of the front of the Victorian Grade I listed station for the first time in 150 years.

As I went back through Kings Cross on Friday morning, the fences were back up!
Only briefly this time though: they were setting up a brightly-coloured funfair. If you knew Kings Cross as it was before all the work began, it is hard to imagine just how big this square is. At 75,000 sq ft it is plenty big enough to house this Victorian-style funfair.

I haven’t been to Kings Cross since 1972. For your sake I am glad the construction is finished. They did a wonderful job!

Wow, I was in Kings Cross on Monday and all the fences where still up. I had no idea they were this close to completion. It really has been a mamouth job and all in all with the building of the new Eurostar terminal must have taken the best part of 10 years
