Manchester’s Northern Quarter has plenty of spectacular graffiti, though a lot of it is hidden during the day because it is on raised shop shutters. I was there on August Bank Holiday this year when most shops were closed and was pleasantly surprised to discover plenty of new work. The pinks of Kelzo‘s work on a barber shop caught my eye.
Kelzo is a Mancunian graffiti artist, now famous around the world. He has been plying his trade since 1984, when he gained notoriety for his painting of the walls of Hulme, an inner city area of Manchester known for its high crime rate. For more on Hulme’s history and the role of graffiti in its rescue click here.
Many of Kelzo’s works feature buses and trains, and this penchant for transport does not stop at painting walls, he also applies his art to the vehicles themselves. Go to his website to see some great examples, including funky camper vans and even an ice cream van. If you drive a van but don’t want to be “white van man” you might consider commissioning Kelzo to jazz it up.

Thank you so much for introducing me to kelzo’s work. Los Angeles, where I grew up, has some amazing latino graffiti (the signatures are known as placas) and I have always loved this artform.
Happy Pink Saturday,
