Lavender is actually a genus of the mint family. It is native to the Old World and is found from Cape Verde and the Canary Islands, across Europe to Africa, south west Asia and India. And it is Tasmania that lays claim to the largest privately owned lavender farm in the world.
Personally, I associate it most readily with Provence, and I was surprised to learn just how many lavender farms there are in England. Surrey and Norfolk are probably the best known but you’ll also find them in the Cotswolds, Kent and my own county of Hertfordshire.
The verse at the top is from a traditional English nursery rhyme, which developed from a rather more bawdy folk song named Diddle Diddle, Or The Kind Country Lovers.

Wow very beautiful. I am hoping that my 2x visit to Europe will let me see a lavender farm, but i was disappointed. Until now i still appease myself in photographs.

The rolling beds of Lavender are incredible! I’ve heard the Lavender Blue song, but not the bawdy version, but I don’t think they taught my children many historical songs. Thay’s sad.
