The statue of Marianne, the name traditionally given to the French Republic, has pride of place in the huge pedestrian square that is Place de la République. It was sculpted by the Morice brothers and was unveiled on Bastille Day, 14 July, of 1885. She holds an olive branch, the symbol of peace, in her right hand and a tablet inscribed Droits de l’Homme (Human Rights) in her left hand.
