Road Train Hell

Road train in Le Panier

My heart sank when I saw (well, heard, actually) this road train carve through the quaint streets of Le Panier district in Marseille.

I was sitting at the popular Bar des 13 Coins, the one of Jean-Claude Izzo fame, enjoying a peaceful late lunch, when the voice of the train’s guide cut through the air.  I love the ambience of this district, I love its narrow streets, its quirky one-off shops and workshops, and I love the fact that it’s not overrun with tourists. Thankfully the road train won’t be able to get everywhere, but even this disturbance is too much.

  1. Do they not have to be licenced to do their tours, bearing in mind the inconvenience and sound pollution they potentially create for locals and walking visitors (who are much more likely to stop and stare and shop than passengers)?

    • I would think so. But I wonder if they need permission to add a new route. This route didn’t exist when I visited same time the year before.

  3. Oh how I hate those tourist road trains. To my shame I had to use one in Kos because it was the only way to get the 5 kilometre route to the the Askelepion. I still have regrets and nightmares about it!
