La Vella Quaresma, or Old Lady Lent, is usually represented by an old woman with a sour-looking face. She has seven legs, sometimes herrings as legs, and she normally carries a cod and a basket of vegetables. Paper figures are used during lent to count down to Easter by pulling off one of her legs each week.
This image adorns an old gate in the Born area of Barcelona. It is by artist Aurelio Cachafeiro, born in León but now resident in Barcelona.
So interesting.
