Rosalind the Handless Clock

mundus transit et concupiscentia eius

-“the world passeth away, and the lust thereof”,  Vulgate 1 John 2:17

In a street in Cambridge, the transition of time is shown by a 24-carat gold-plated stainless steel clock face that is around 1.5 metres in diameter and known by the students as Rosalind. The current time is shown by opening slits in the clock face that are backlit with blue LEDs.  Above the disc is a large, scary grasshopper, or similar.

You’ll find this unusual time teller outside Taylor Library at Corpus Christi College.  It was conceived and funded by John C. Taylor, an old member of the college, and unveiled in September 2008 by Cambridge physicist Stephen Hawking.  It is not always accurate in its time telling but it’s most definitely worth a visit.
