A colorful note: eggplant colour is a brownish-purpled, named after the purple variety of eggplant (or aubergine as it is called in much of Europe). Interestingly, eggplants come in a wide variety of colours; in China you’ll find violet ones, in Thailand, small green ones. The vegetable was given the name eggplant after being discovered by English explorers in Asia – the ones they found were small and white and looked like eggs!

I think it looked better in reality. Apparently, this variation came from Italy and/or South Africa. I’ve not seen it in Britain but maybe I don’t look hard enough when food shopping!
