Johann Wolfgang von Goethe (1749 – 1832), German poet, playwright, novelist, scientist, statesman, theatre director, and critic, studied law at Leipzig University from 1765 to 1768. He may not have enjoyed his studies but he liked the city and called it ” a little Paris”. A sculpture of the young Goethe now stands outside the wonderful baroque former Stock Exchange, heading in the direction of one of his favourite haunts, the Auerbachs Keller.

Serendipity! I’ve got Goethe today in my Photographing Public Art photo. It’s unusual to see him as a younger man, the iconic pictures of him are when he was older.
Auerbachs Keller is definitely something that rings a bell. Uns ist ganz kannibalisch wohl, als wie fünfhundert Säuen (quoted from memory: We feel wonderfully well, just like cannibals, just like five hundred pigs!)

The Keller is a well known spot, I understand, but it was closed when I was there 😦 And I was just one of many who were checking all the doors and signs to see how to get in!
