Portobello Tower Amusements, Edinburgh, January 2022
This octagonal gothic tower is believed to have been built in 1785 as an extravagant summerhouse for the lawyer, John Cunningham. Composed of brick and rubble, it contains pieces of old houses, including window sills and lintels. These houses were demolished to make way for Edinburgh’s South Bridge.
By 1864 the tower was seriously neglected and was then bought by Mr Paton who restored it and built it into his house. It is now a Category B Listed Building and has been incorporated into the amusement arcade on Portobello beach.
