Soviet style art at Expo Georgia (formerly VDNKH Exhibition Centre),
Tbilisi, Georgia, November 2024

Geometry played a strong role in Soviet art – its rigid lines and rules fitted well with the brazen propagandist art showing industry, life and culture. Often called Socialist Realism it was somehow extra-real, or maybe not real at all.

Excellent geometry, and so very Soviet….

indeed. Not too much jollity allowed with such important scientific and industrial tasks.

These mosaics seem somehow softer, more human than much socialist realism art.

I think you’re right, Margaret. Although the style was very recognisable I did enjoy my wander around this site without too many thoughts of Communist rigours.
it is now a very green area with fountains and plenty of trees. I think some of this has been added more recently.

this must have taken so much time – wonderful mosaics although also slightly uncomfortable

I think plenty of work had taken place to renovate these murals. There were others still in need of TLC. And yes you certainly can’t miss all of those bold lines and the rules that came with them. But I did enjoy them. Some seemed gentler than others.

🙂 yes, it’s very Soviet so not something you’ll see if you don’t actually get to these countries.
