Tbilisi, Georgia, November 2024
Th Greek legend of Jason and the Golden Fleece is set in the kingdom of Kolkheti, which is now part of Georgia, so it was no surprise to find this marvellous mural in Tbilisi. Italian artist, VESOD, captures the moment when Medea prepares the potion that will help Jason complete the challenges set by her father resulting in his capture of the golden fleece.
There are several references to this Greek myth and these two characters around Georgia. The origin of the idea of a Golden Fleece is very interesting. Sheep fleeces were used to prospect for gold: the fleeces were draped in fast flowing mountain streams, trapping gold in their dense wool. Once removed the fleeces were shaken or combed to remove the gold.
This wonderful mural was created as part of the Tbilisi Mural Fest in September 2022. It was supported by the Italian Embassy in Tbilisi and dancers of the Georgian National Ballet posed as models for Medea and Jason.
