Catkins over the River Ver, St Albans, Hertfordshire, 18 February 2025

Now over to all of you. Do come and join us in our Saturday six-word musings.
I’ll admit that many of us openly break the numeric rule and share far more words (all excellent of course!) so the key rule is to have a title of six words – and then create around that the post that you desire! Perhaps in bunches of 6 words if you’re feeling inspired.
To join the challenge, please put a link in your post to the URL of this post. Then come back here and leave us a comment. If you have any problems with linking, just put your own URL into the comment. And do feel free to socialise digitally with the hashtags #SixWordSaturday and #6WS. You’ll find me on Instagram @travel_travel_with_intent and @dsmythphoto

I used to enjoy a good game of darts with my dad, many years ago whcn I was still living in London. In Switzerland it is not such a custom, although I saw this boards on my neighbour’s balcony. I have never seen him play.

Golden! — but on this particular weekend fancy dress can only mean one thing (at least, around here): https://picturesimperfectblog.com/2025/03/01/the-fifth-season-for-fancy-dress/

I do love to see a catkin or two. But I agree. It’s winter in fancy dress.

I thin k you’re right. WE’ve got a really heavy frost again this morning. But accompanied with sun so I think the masquerade will last a few more days 🙂

So that’s what catkins look like! I learn new things every day.

They vary a bit, depending on the tree that is producing them, but generally dangling long clusters of small flowers

An amazing tree. Those flowers certainly create a show

Yes, they make a great show at the end of winter, the plan being to propagate before the leaves get in the way

Do you know the species of the tree?

No. I should have looked closer. A lot of deciduous trees grow catkins so not sure which one this was. 😳

Thanks Debbie. It does look like a hay-fever inducing tree 🤧

Achoo! 🙂 A sure sign of spring, but a menace to those with pollen allergy. Here we are still a couple of weeks away from the main pollen outburst.

Oh dear. Yes they are specifically designed to scatter their pollen widely – so many flowers waving in the winds and before the leaves get in the way and block the pollen from spreading. Great design work by nature but terrible for those with allergies.
