Just a couple of my favourites

Avian flypast, Fernsehturm, Berlin, December 2024

One of my favourite cities is Berlin, and I’m missing it. I often get out there for their Christmas markets but I didn’t make it last year. So instead of a physical visit I’m enjoying looking back at my photos and returning to some favourite films, tv and books.

At the moment, I’m rewatching a big favourite, Deutschland 83, a German tv series that showed first in the US in June 2015, then in Germany in November 2015 and in the UK in January 2016. It is in German with English subtitles.

This gripping series is set, as the title suggests, in 1983 in East and West Germany, with much of it in Berlin. Keep your eyes open and you’ll spot some key sites like the tv tower or Fernsheturm (see above), the old Stasi headquarters and the US listening station (in far better condition than it is now – see left).

In fact, as part of the pre-launch marketing, some slider images were issued showing key parts of Berlin in 1983 and 2015.

I highly recommend watching this series and if you enjoy it, you’ve got Deutschland 86 and Deutschland 89 to watch too.

Another of my favourites is Queen’s Gambit, an excellent Netflix series. If you’ve watched it already you may be wondering why I’m linking this to Berlin. Well, much of it was shot in Berlin. Places such as Ben Snyder’s Department in Louisville, Kentucky, and many of the Moscow locations were filmed on Karl-Marx-Allee in Berlin. To find out more about the film locations, I recommend watching the short Creating the Queen’s Gambit on Netflix.

That’s enough of my ramblings for now – I’ll be back with some of my favourite books next Saturday.

Now over to all of you. Do come and join us in our Saturday six-word musings.

I’ll admit that many of us openly break the numeric rule (as I have today) and share far more words (all excellent of course!) so the key rule is to have a title of six words – and then create around that the post that you desire!

To join the challenge, please put a link in your post to the URL of this post. Then come back here and leave us a comment. If you have any problems with linking, just put your own URL into the comment. And do feel free to socialise digitally with the hashtags #SixWordSaturday and #6WS. You’ll find me on Instagram @travel_travel_with_intent and @dsmythphoto
