Space Invaders and Rubik Cubes

DSC01757

Space Invader in Shoreditch, East London

Invader is  a well-known French urban artist, born in 1969, who works largely with square mosaic tiles, producing street art based on Space Invaders and other 1970s arcade games. He also produces works of “Rubikcubism”, using stacks of tiles from Rubik’s Cubes and is also known for his QR code mosaic works.

His work can be seen on the streets of cities all over the world.  The first “invasion”, as he terms his city visits, was in Paris in 1998 and then spread to over 30 other cities in France.  His latest invasion seems to have been Hong Kong in January this year, more than ten years after his first visit to that city.  His invasions generally last 2-3 weeks; each work is photographed and mapped and “invasion maps” are later sold on his on-line shop.

The following can all be seen in Shoreditch (assuming they haven’t been stolen or vandalised since I photographed them earlier this year).

I spotted the one below in Paris just a couple of weeks ago.

Despite the apparent simplicity of a square tile, Invader is quoted as saying these real-life representations of computer-generated pixels have given him scope to be creative: “It’s just a little square, but when you put them together, it can create many things.”

Linked to Theme Day: Squares.
