-Look Up, Look Down Challenge, Week 81

I was in Vienna last week and although I’ve visited a few times before, I can’t possible tire of the architectural finesse of the Cathedral. Stephansdom (St Stephens Cathedral) is the seat of the Archbishop of Vienna. It dominates the old town of Vienna with its dizzying tower, its Romanesque and Gothic details and its striking geometric patterned roof.
Standing at 136 metres tall and affectionately referred to by the city’s inhabitants as “Steffl” (a diminutive form of “Stephen”), Stephansdom’s huge south tower is its highest point and an instantly recognisable feature of the Vienna skyline.
The richly coloured roof is covered by 230,000 glazed tiles. Above the choir, on the south side of the building, the tiles form a mosaic of the double-headed eagle that is symbolic of the Habsburg dynasty. On the north side, the tiles depict the coats of arms of the City of Vienna and of the Republic of Austria.

I have climbed up to the roof of the cathedral. A lot of stairs for someone who suffers from vertigo but the view was amazing. Lovely photos.

pitty the weather was bad. some sun makes such a huge difference while visiting places – I enjoyed even ‘not attractive/ugly’ places on sunny days. although I became less demanding – just give me dry weather and I am content :-). nice photos, make me consider visiting Vienna (never been there).

It’s well worth a visit. The main problem was the rain – hard to take up views when the rain is coming down onto the lens.

It’s extremely beautiful and I was pleased to see it’s modern, more relaxed side in the street art areas. But I didn’t feel I got under its skin. It may be because the bad weather meant I kept moving – either to get out of the rain, or to stop my blood from freezing! – and everyone else was doing the same. I may be back there late in the summer and it will be interesting to see how different a trip that is.

Beautiful and stunning architecture! I actually like the smaller tower more:) Vienna- a beautiful city one never gets tired of (except for the prices:) )
