Barcelona’s Avinguda del Paral·lel as a noisy, busy thoroughfare that has never really attracted my attention before. Having discovered an excellent tapas bar here (more on that here), though, I now have reason to visit this part of town. While enjoying my tapas I spotted this architectural delight overhead.
It’s obvious where this place got its name: the Casa dels Cargols – House of Snails – is simply covered with snails (plus the odd caterpillar).
As the story goes, the original owner commissioned the house after discovering gold while hunting for snails up on Montjuïc. In recognition of these lucky gastropods, he honoured them with pride of place on the façade of this beautiful building on a prime corner plot at the junction of Tamarit and Parallel.
If seeing it from below isn’t enough for you, at least one of the apartments inside is available to rent on airbnb.

Stunning and ornate – not my style, but it all fits beautifully together – and who would have thought to choose snails as the main theme:) Wish I could have tapas there with you – I remember I really liked the Spanish cuisine!
