Trekking across the sands at Mont St Michel, France,  September 2016

At low tide, many visitors make the challenging trek across the quicksand, following the route of former pilgrims.  In the days before causeway and bridge, this was the precarious route of those in the quest to visit the Abbey dedicated to St Michael.

Those wishing to take this route must check the tide timetable in advance.  The waters come in at high speed and running ahead of them is not an option given the suction power of the sands.
